Elder Ajiboye Ogunsola , a well-known grassroots politician and ward leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been shot dead in Orewole local government of Osun State, in what residents describe as a politically motivated killing.
The deceased, a respected community figure and active political mobiliser, was murdered Last night at his residence ,11th January 2022 during a period of heightened political tension ahead of local government elections. The incident occurred in his Local Government Area, sending shockwaves through the community and sparking fear among political stakeholders.
According to local sources, unidentified gunmen carried out the attack. Details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting remain unclear, but witnesses reported that the assailants fled the scene immediately after the incident. The victim was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The late ward leader was widely recognised for his involvement in grassroots politics and his strong influence within the PDP structure at the ward level. Community members described him as a dedicated political organiser who played a significant role in mobilising support for his party.
His killing came at a time of intense political rivalry in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Osun State, where political competition had reportedly heightened tensions within local communities. Observers noted that the attack added to growing concerns about politically linked violence in the state.
Residents expressed shock and outrage over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the slain politician. “He was an important voice in our community,” one local resident said. “His death has created fear among political families and supporters.”
The police confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the killing. However, as of the time of this publication, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The assassination has raised fresh concerns about security during election periods and the safety of local political figures. Community leaders and party members have condemned the act, describing it as an attack not only on an individual but on democratic participation at the grassroots level.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.
