The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticized the 30-day investigation ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu into the fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, describing the directive as a cosmetic approach and a poor attempt to save face.
The opposition party made its position known in a swift reaction issued on Tuesday, following the government’s mandate to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to probe the fraudulent council.
According to the NDC, any executive directive that leaves the key actors implicated in the corruption scandal in their current official positions cannot lead to a credible outcome.
“This is not good enough. Any directive that leaves key actors in the corruption scandal in their positions is merely cosmetic. A poor attempt to save face,” the NDC stated.
The party asserted that a transparent and thorough investigation is completely impossible while individuals connected to the fraudulent scheme continue to hold power and wield official influence.
Consequently, the opposition platform demanded that everyone directly involved in the scandal immediately step down from their offices to prevent any interference with the anti-graft agency’s work.
The NDC maintained that only a full, unbiased investigation, free from the shadow of active officials can restore public trust and uncover the institutional loopholes that allowed a fictitious council to fake presidential legitimacy, the statement concluded.
