President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a historic joint address to the National Assembly on Friday, June 12, 2026, anchoring a week-long series of events to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the formal inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with organizing this year’s national celebrations.
While inaugurating the committee at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, confirmed that the joint parliamentary address stands out as a core highlight of the programs approved by the presidency.
Senator Akume characterized Democracy Day as a solemn and significant period for reflection on the collective resilience and determination of citizens who fought to restore democratic rule to Nigeria.
He paid special tribute to the foundational heroes of the June 12, 1993 democratic struggle, explicitly honoring the legacy and immense sacrifices of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose commitment to the mandate ultimately defined the anniversary.
According to the SGF, the 2026 commemoration offers the federal government a deliberate platform to demonstrate its ongoing milestones in consolidating democratic governance and advancing national growth, despite the country’s current socio-economic hurdles.
With the anniversary closely approaching, Akume challenged the newly formed committee which includes key ministers, security chiefs, and senior administrative officials to immediately begin executing their mandates.
He also emphasized that the scheduled events will remain modest and purposeful, designed to respect the prevailing mood of the nation and mirror the administration’s strict commitment to fiscal prudence.
The official state lineup ahead of the June 12 celebrations features an array of events beginning with a World Press Conference, followed closely by special Juma’at prayers and a dedicated inter-denominational church service.
The week will continue into the following Tuesday with a flagship Democracy Day Public Lecture, alongside targeted youth and women-focused development programs.
The national commemoration will culminate on Friday, June 12, pairing the President’s legislative address with an early morning presidential broadcast and an official Democracy Day Gala Night to conclude the anniversary.
