The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has identified Nigeria’s expansive geographical size and porous borders as primary factors complicating the nation’s ongoing struggle against insecurity.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Bwala described the country’s security situation as “hydra-headed,” noting that the complexity of the terrain makes the total eradication of criminal threats a significant challenge for the federal government.

“If you have a little understanding of the nature, boundaries, and geographical size of Nigeria, as well as the tendency for insecurity to infiltrate through different routes, you will understand that we are dealing with a hydra-headed insecurity situation,” Bwala stated.

He particularly addressed the rise in kidnappings, acknowledging that the criminal activity has evolved into what he termed a “crisis economy.”

Despite these hurdles, Bwala reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to curbing threats through strengthened security operations and more coordinated regional strategies.

Highlighting specific government interventions, the presidential aide pointed to the “Safe School” initiative as a critical response to the targeting of educational institutions. Under this program, the government is actively relocating students from schools in remote, high-risk areas to state capitals where they can continue their education in more secure environments.

Bwala further noted that the administration entered office with a clear-eyed view of the nation’s security and economic vulnerabilities.

He asserted that the bold policy decisions taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were necessary to reset the country’s trajectory, even while acknowledging that such reforms have faced resistance.

The Presidency maintains that while the geographical realities of Nigeria create persistent security gaps, the government is continuously adapting its operational frameworks to protect citizens and reclaim territories currently exploited by criminal elements.
