POS merchant arraigned over alleged N950,000 theft

A 26-year-old man Oladele Fatiu on Wednesday appeared before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo for allegedly stealing cash and valuables worth N950,000.

Fatiu whose address was not provided, is facing a one-count charge bordering on stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, ASP Ojo Adewusi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on July 7 at about 3:30p.m. at Panseke Area in Abeokuta.

Adewusi alleged that Fatiu, who was employed as a POS merchant absconded with cash and valuables valued at N950,000, belonging to one Mr Ojo Micheal.

He further stated that the stolen items included a cash sum of N400,000, three POS machines valued N100,000, a Samsung mobile phone of 250,000, one Techno phone valued N150,000 and a power bank valued N50,000.

According to Adewusi the incident was reported to the police which led to his arrest.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 383 and 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Vol. 1 Laws of  Ogun 2006.

The Magistrate, Mrs R.A Lawal,  granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties who must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary.

Lawal ordered that Fatiu be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

She adjourned the case until Aug. 28 for hearing.
