The Osun State Police Command has warned residents against the circulation of false information alleging banditry invasion in parts of the best, describing such reports as misleading and capable of causing panic among the public.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, the command said it had observed with concern the spread of unverified security alerts on social media and other communication platforms.
The command stated that extensive security assessments and intelligence-gathering operations carried out across the state did not support the claims being circulated.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, warned individuals and groups involved in creating and sharing false security information to desist immediately.
“The Command wishes to state unequivocally that these reports are unfounded, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic, fear, and tension among law-abiding residents. Extensive security assessments and intelligence gathering conducted by the Command have not substantiated the claims being circulated,” the statement said.
The police commissioner noted that the dissemination of unverified information undermines public confidence and poses a threat to public peace and security.
He advised members of the public to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing such reports, warning that anyone found spreading false information capable of inciting fear or causing public disorder would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, adding that security agencies remain vigilant across the state.
“The Command reassures residents of its unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and urges citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and continue with their lawful activities without fear. Security agencies remain on alert and are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of all residents across the State as the Command has deployed covert and Violent Crime Response operatives to be on the lookout,” the statement added.
The police further urged residents to promptly report suspicious movements and security concerns to the nearest police station or other relevant security agencies for immediate action.
