The Kebbi State Police Command has connected Monday’s assault on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, to violations of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) campaign rules by political supporters.
Commissioner of Police Bello Sani disclosed this following an urgent security meeting convened with heads of state security agencies. He confirmed that no arrests have been made but investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of political groups’ involvement.
“We have launched an inquiry into the attack, and no arrests have been effected yet. The governor called this meeting to assess recent security developments,” Mr Sani explained.
The violence unfolded near the GRA area of Birnin-Kebbi and involved rival political party members. Security agencies have resolved to summon party leaders to warn them against further breaches of electoral laws. Mr Sani pointed out that these steps are intended to curb any escalation of violence as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He called on all political stakeholders to show restraint, underscoring that ensuring peace and stability is a shared duty among leaders from all parties.
Mr Malami, who served as AGF from 2015 to 2023 during the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 2 July before joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Reports say he was attacked while returning from a condolence visit in Birnin-Kebbi, the state capital.
