The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is seeking information that can lead to the arrest of Abeeb Salam, a 29-year-old man, and his cohorts for organizing a gay party which took place at Orita Challenge, Ibadan, Oyo State.
A group of local vigilantes and policemen foiled the event at a private house and arrested several participants on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025.
Police noted that while some individuals escaped during the operation, their identities were recorded using information from arrested partners and recovered ID cards.
A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend those who fled.
Abeeb, who is claimed to be the organizer of the party, narrowly escaped arrest during the raid. His identity was confirmed after interrogating some of the participants currently in custody.
During our reporting, an advocate informed our correspondent that Abeeb has fled the country.
He reportedly sustained injuries and faced threats, harassment, and fear for his life due to his sexuality, highlighting the continued risks faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Nigeria.
The advocate disclosed that Salam grew up in a conservative community in southwestern Nigeria.
Friends say he lived quietly for years, concealing his identity out of fear of social rejection and legal consequences. However, his situation allegedly worsened after rumors about his sexuality began to circulate in his neighborhood, leading to threats of being reported to authorities or attacked by community members.
“I realised that staying meant risking my freedom and possibly my life,” Abeeb said in a statement shared through the advocate. “I had no protection. Even the people meant to help could turn against me.”
Human rights organizations have repeatedly documented cases of LGBTQ+ Nigerians being subjected to mob violence, arbitrary arrests, and extortion.
“This is not just one story; it reflects the reality of many young Nigerians who are forced into exile simply for being who they are,” said a spokesperson for a support group.
A police source, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed that an investigation has commenced and that Abeeb is on their wanted list.
All efforts to reach the Police Command Spokesperson proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
