The Anambra State Police Command has reopened investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Okechukwu Akaneme, a prominent Onitsha businessman and former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ONICCIMA).
Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed that the Command is aware of growing public concerns and social media reports linking Akaneme’s death to a controversial enforcement operation allegedly conducted by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), purportedly with the support of armed police officers. The operation, which took place on October 11, 2024, reportedly left Akaneme with severe spinal injuries from which he never fully recovered before passing away on July 10, 2025.
While offering condolences to the family and associates of the late businessman, Ikenga noted that Akaneme was a respected figure in the state’s economic landscape, whose death has triggered serious questions about possible misconduct during the enforcement exercise. He confirmed that an internal inquiry had initially been conducted, revealing that certain actions by personnel during the operation may have breached the standard protocols expected of law enforcement officers.
In light of the recent developments, the Commissioner of Police has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka to re-examine the case and conduct a comprehensive probe into the incident and the roles played by all individuals or agencies involved. The Command emphasized its zero tolerance for abuse of power, assuring the public that any officer found culpable will face strict disciplinary and legal consequences.
Ikenga further stated that the police are working closely with relevant state agencies to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation, and reiterated the Command’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
