The Police Command in Ogun on Friday, said it has started a statewide operation targeting cars and buses running with covered, faded, hidden, or unauthorised number plates.
According to the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the move follows an order from the Inspector-General of Police.
He said the goal is to boost security and keep residents safer.
According to him, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Bode Ojajuni has instructed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders, to seize any vehicle breaking the rule for further checks.
He said that the ‘sweep’ also covers cars with altered, unauthorised, or wrongly issued plates, adding that only official vehicles approved to fly flags under protocol are exempted.
Babaseyi urged drivers, transporters, and fleet owners to make sure their plates are genuine and clearly visible.
He stressed the operation isn’t to harass law-abiding citizens, but to help police identify vehicles and investigate crimes faster.
“The initiative will assist law enforcement agencies in tracking criminal suspects and strengthening the state’s security architecture.
“The command reiterates its commitment to protecting lives and property while residents are advised to comply with the directive,”he said.
He said that officers on duty have been urged to act professionally and within the law.
He urged residents to report emergencies and provide credible information through the Gateway Shield toll-free line, 0800 000 9111.
“Other emergency lines provided by the command are 0906 283 7609, 0912 014 1706, 0915 102 7369 and 0708 497 2994.
