The Lagos State Police Command has detained several officers from its Anti-Cultism Squad following allegations of harassment and the unlawful confiscation of mobile phones from youths at the Ojuelegba Under Bridge.
This development arises amid growing public concern regarding a perceived resurgence of police impunity across the state.
According to a statement made available to Journalists, the involved officers were identified and brought before the Commissioner of Police to provide their statements.
Following this initial inquiry, the Commissioner ordered their immediate detention pending the conclusion of a formal investigation.
The Command confirmed that the officers’ statements have been documented and they will remain in custody while the internal probe continues.
To ensure a thorough investigation, the Command has contacted the complainant, who is expected to report to the station on Wednesday to provide additional details.
The police have also assured the public that the outcome of this investigation will be made available in due course.
Eyewitnesses alleged that members of the Anti-Cultism Squad stationed at Ojuelegba frequently stopped young residents to search their mobile devices, occasionally seizing the phones without legal justification.
These incidents have sparked renewed criticism from Nigerians on social media who maintain that such misconduct persists despite repeated institutional reforms.
This latest controversy follows a recent directive from the Force Headquarters, which ordered these specific officers to report to Abuja for administrative review.
Despite that standing order to relocate to the capital, the officers were reportedly still operating within the Ojuelegba axis when the alleged harassment occurred.
