Police arrest two Customs personnel in Osun over Osogbo driver death

The Osun State Police Command has arrested two personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service in connection with a shooting incident that led to the death of a driver in Osogbo on Sunday.

The suspects, identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, were apprehended following the incident, which occurred around the Dada Estate area of the state capital while they were pursuing suspected foreign-used (tokunbo) vehicles.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, police operatives responded swiftly after receiving a report of the incident and arrested the two Customs officers.

He said the driver of an ash-coloured Toyota Corolla, one of the vehicles allegedly being chased by the Customs officers, was shot and later confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.

The body has been deposited at the morgue, and the identity of the deceased is yet to be confirmed.

The police also disclosed that several items were recovered from the scene, including a Beretta pistol with breech number 125024, eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition, one spent 9mm shell, a white Toyota Corolla with registration number AAA 400 GQ (Lagos), and an ash Toyota Corolla with registration number GFQ 0982 (Texas).

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ibrahim Gotan, has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The command assured the public that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law and urged residents to remain calm while cooperating with security agencies by providing credible information to aid the ongoing investigation.
