The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man, Kabiru Nuhu, for allegedly setting his 60-year-old father on fire in the Kazaure Local Government Area of the state.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Shi’isu Adam, stated that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect poured a petroleum substance on the victim before igniting it.
The incident occurred on April 1, 2026, at approximately 6:30 am in the Magama Quarters of Kazaure town.
The police moved quickly to the scene following a distress report from a resident in Lokon Malamai.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim in critical condition, while the suspect also sustained fresh burns and injuries to his forehead, arms, and toes. The injured father was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died while receiving treatment.
Adam further disclosed that Kabiru Nuhu is currently in custody and will be charged with patricide.
The suspect is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Dutse for further investigation and prosecution.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State, Haruna Yahaya, condemned the act and called for calm, noting that the command is working to establish a motive to ensure justice is served.
He also urged residents to resolve disputes peacefully and report early warning signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent such occurrence.
