The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) on Tuesday, 9 July 2025, convened a high-level engagement session with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), RIL Hydro Kraft Limited, leading boat operators, and key marine stakeholders across the state to discuss the integration of cleaner fuel alternatives into the inland water transport sector.
Held at LASWA’s headquarters in Ikoyi, the meeting marked a major step towards promoting sustainable energy solutions and transitioning Lagos’ water transport system to a more eco-friendly model.
Initiated by LASWA, the session aimed to align Nigeria’s broader clean energy agenda with operational realities faced by local boat operators, assess the viability of marine CNG usage, and promote collaborative strategies to drive an effective shift to alternative fuels on Lagos waterways.
In his opening remarks, LASWA General Manager Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel underscored the strategic importance of introducing CNG-powered boats and electric ferries as part of the Authority’s long-term vision to reduce carbon emissions, improve passenger safety, and cut operating costs.
He noted that Lagos’ waterways are a vital component of the state’s future mobility infrastructure, and that energy transition remains a cornerstone of the administration’s wider transport reform.
Leading the delegation from the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Programme Director and CEO Engr Michael Oluwagbemi outlined the federal government’s roadmap for accelerating CNG adoption across multiple transport sectors, including maritime.
He cited the successes recorded in the road transport sector and reaffirmed government commitment to providing technical support and policy incentives to encourage the uptake of CNG in marine transport.
Mr Layi Solesi, CEO of RIL Hydro Krafts Limited, delivered a detailed technical presentation covering conversion processes, fuelling infrastructure, safety protocols, and the long-term cost advantages of switching to CNG. He also presented case studies from other coastal cities and pledged close collaboration with LASWA and boat operators on pilot projects.
During the interactive session, boat operators raised key concerns relating to affordability, engine compatibility, fuelling access, and system maintenance. In response, representatives from LASWA and the Pi-CNG assured stakeholders of a phased and inclusive rollout supported by training, infrastructure development, and stakeholder engagement at every level.
The meeting further solidified LASWA’s role as a forward-thinking regulator committed to modernising water transport while fostering environmental sustainability. Stakeholders present expressed strong support for the initiative and a shared resolve to embrace a cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective future for marine travel in Lagos.
