The Kabiru Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately expunge every recognition accorded to Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary, citing a subsisting court judgment affirming his expulsion.
This was stated in a letter dated April 16, 2026, and addressed to the INEC Chairman by Abdulazeez Ibrahim (SAN) on behalf of the party’s legal team.
The lawyers notified the Commission of a judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory which they said affirmed Anyanwu’s expulsion from the party.
According to the letter, the PDP’s National Disciplinary Committee on March 10, 2025, recommended Anyanwu’s expulsion for anti-party activities, and the recommendation was accepted and implemented by the party.
Anyanwu subsequently challenged his expulsion, but his case was dismissed on the merit by various courts, the letter disclosed.
The PDP’s lawyers said Anyanwu had filed a Notice of Appeal “just few days ago” but argued that the notice did not amount to a stay.
“By implication, the judgment of the Court dismissing his case challenging his expulsion is subsisting and remains in force and the Commission has a constitutional obligation to enforce, comply and implement the judgment even without prompting,” the letter read.
The party reminded INEC that decisions of the Federal High Court, High Court and other courts established by the Constitution “shall be enforced in any part of the Federation by all authorities and persons.”
The letter listed three demands including asking INEC expunge every recognition given to Anyanwu, including correspondences, notices, mails, and letters signed by him It also asked INEC to immediately delist Anyanwu’s name from its portal as the National Secretary of the party.
The PDP’s legal team warned that failure to comply would leave it with “no further recourse to the Commission regarding the necessary steps we shall take in ensuring that justice is done.”
Those steps, it said, “may include filing contempt proceedings against the Chairman of the Commission as well as instituting an action to challenge the decision of the Commission.”
“It is our sincere belief that the Commission will be guided by wise counsel and avoid further public perception as an institution encouraging destabilisation of opposition parties in Nigeria,” the letter concluded.
Anyanwu, a former governorship candidate in Imo State, has been embroiled in a protracted leadership dispute within the PDP. He is deemed to be an ally of the minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
