Panic gripped travelers on Sunday along the Ore–Benin Expressway after policemen allegedly opened fire on an Okeyson Transport passenger bus that reportedly failed to slow down at a checkpoint, causing chaos and a massive traffic jam on the busy highway.

The shooting incident, captured in a viral video, showed stranded commuters trekking on foot and angrily condemning the officers’ actions. Some were heard lamenting that the policeman “would not even be able to pay for the car he shot at.”

Eyewitnesses said the situation nearly turned violent until Nollywood actor Mercy Johnson’s husband, Prince Odi Okojie, arrived at the scene and intervened. Okojie was said to have calmed the enraged crowd and reportedly paid for the damaged tyre of the bus, after which movement along the expressway was restored.

The incident left many travellers shaken, with several calling for disciplinary action against the officers involved.

Police authorities were yet to issue an official statement as of the time of filing this report.
