Oyo Gov’t sets record straight on power projects, faults Adelabu’s claims

31 Mar 2026

The Oyo State Government has responded to what it described as inaccurate statements made by the Honourable Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu, regarding the status of power projects in the state.

The government said it was necessary to set the record straight in the interest of the public.

It stated that the 11MW Independent Power Project (IPP) was completed and partially operationalised, with about 5MW successfully commissioned. The power generated was used to supply electricity to critical government infrastructure at the Agodi Secretariat for about five months during its testing phase.

The government, however, clarified key details of the project:

The project operated under a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The Oyo State Government did not release capital funds to the contractor, as the project was fully funded through private investment.
Payments made were strictly for electricity consumed during the testing period and not for project execution.

According to the government, the limitation experienced was not solely in generation but in distribution expansion, particularly the need to extend supply beyond the Secretariat to residential and commercial areas such as the Bodija–Total Garden axis.

It added that efforts are ongoing to address these structural and commercial gaps in collaboration with project partners.

The government also highlighted progress on the 12MW Ibadan Independent Power Gas Project, describing it as a more sustainable and technically advanced initiative.

It stated that:

The project is at an advanced stage, with civil works, generator base infrastructure, and ancillary facilities underway.
Transmission infrastructure is progressing, including the installation of concrete poles and distribution fittings across key parts of Ibadan.
The project is designed to serve not only government facilities but also strategic public institutions, street lighting, and wider economic clusters.

The government said the project represents a transition from an experimental power supply model to a structured, scalable, and integrated electricity solution for the state.

While noting that constructive criticism is welcome, the government stressed that such must be based on verified information.

It maintained that the Minister’s statement was deficient in facts and does not reflect the actual progress of power projects in Oyo State.
