Oyo 2027: Stop name-dropping me for votes — Olubadan warns Politicians

28 May 2026

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has cautioned politicians in Oyo state ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that relying on his name alone will not guarantee electoral success.

The monarch emphasized that the electorate in Oyo State will judge candidates based on their track records, personal integrity, and development-driven manifestos rather than royal associations.

Speaking with journalists at his private residence in the Bodija area of Ibadan, the former Oyo State Governor and veteran legislator noted that while politicians are free to align themselves with him to boost their campaigns, the ultimate decision rests entirely with the voters.

Oba Ladoja described the political aspirants and the citizens of the state as his children, adding that there is no harm in politicians identifying with his leadership.

However, he maintained that true electoral victory must be earned through tangible value, not mere name-dropping.

“Let them use my name to promote themselves if it is meaningful to them, but the populace will decide who rules them at the end of the day, not my name,” the traditional ruler stated.

He advised candidates to redirect their focus toward crafting policies and initiatives aimed at improving the standard of living for the citizens, adding that Oyo voters have grown more discerning and will prioritize competence over political connections.

Addressing security issues in the state, specifically the recent kidnapping of students in the Oriire Local Government Area, the Olubadan expressed faith in the rescue operations being conducted by the state government and security agencies.

He explained that the sensitive nature of security operations requires discretion, which is why authorities often withhold operational details from the public.

“Government and security agencies are trying their best. It’s just that they won’t tell you what they’re doing to secure the release of those abducted for security purposes,” the monarch concluded.
