The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to aligning Nigeria’s development goals with international standards for sustainable ocean governance, positioning the country as a regional leader in marine protection and economic diversification.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, made this known on Wednesday in a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Dr Bolaji Akinola.
Oyetola described Nigeria’s ocean and coastal resources as vital to national development, underscoring their central role in maritime trade, food security, transportation, and climate resilience.
“Our ocean is not just a geographic feature; it is a critical part of our economy and national life,” he said. “We are determined to align Nigeria’s development agenda with global frameworks that promote sustainable ocean governance.”
The minister said the Federal Government’s priorities reflect the environmental sustainability goals of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places strong focus on building a diversified and resilient economy.
Oyetola is scheduled to represent President Tinubu at the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), which will take place from 9 to 13 June in Nice, France.
Describing the conference as a “timely and crucial gathering,” the minister said the event would bring together global leaders, scientists, and marine stakeholders to advance action on ocean conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.
He added that Nigeria’s participation aligns with the global observance of World Oceans Day on 8 June, which serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to address mounting pressures on marine ecosystems.
“Our attendance at UNOC3 is a strong signal of this administration’s commitment to protecting marine ecosystems, while also tapping into the economic opportunities of the blue economy to improve the lives of all Nigerians,” Oyetola said.
The minister disclosed that the Nigerian delegation will take part in high-level meetings, panel discussions, and bilateral engagements aimed at boosting international partnerships and securing investment in sustainable marine infrastructure, coastal resilience projects, and ocean science.
He noted that the country will also use the platform to showcase recent domestic reforms, including improvements in marine protection, port modernisation initiatives, and support for artisanal fisheries.
According to Oyetola, Nigeria’s active involvement in global ocean governance efforts reinforces its growing influence in maritime innovation and sustainable coastal development across West Africa.
