…secures gas supply deal for Aba Power Limited

In a major move to address the perennial energy challenges in the state capital, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, on Wednesday, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for a 15 MVA Injection Substation at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia.

The project, which is designed to boost electricity supply across Umuahia and its environs, is a collaborative initiative between the Abia State Government and the Federal Government.

According to the Governor, the facility comprises two distinct components: a 7.5 MVA, 33/11 kV substation constructed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), and a counterpart 7.5 MVA injection substation funded by the Abia State Government.

Governor Otti disclosed that the state’s component of the project has already been captured in the proposed 2026 budget.

He set a strict timeline for the project, announcing that the state-funded portion would be completed within three months, spanning January to March 2026.

“Our administration is determined to deliver results. I have urged the NDPHC to accelerate their schedule so that we can commission both projects by June 2026,” Otti stated.

The Governor commended President Bola Tinubu for broadening the national electricity outlook to include states, private sector players, and international partners, noting that such collaboration is a reliable vehicle for development.

He also thanked the management of the NDPHC, led by Engr. Jennifer Adighije who was represented at the event by Engr. Bello Babayo Bello for prioritizing Abia State in the agency’s strategic investment plan.

In a related development aimed at stabilizing power in the commercial nerve centre of the state, Governor Otti announced that his administration has successfully concluded arrangements with Heirs Holdings to supply gas to Aba Power Limited.

He stated that the agreement is geared towards ensuring steady and uninterrupted electricity generation for the Aba ring-fenced area.

“Reliable power is key to development and progress, and we are here to help bring it to every home and business in Abia State,” the Governor affirmed, assuring residents that his administration will deploy every resource to ensure the timely completion of these critical energy projects.

The event was attended by distinguished national and state legislative leaders and senior government officials.
