The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate for 2027, Peter Obi, has called for compassion and support for families who lost loved ones during the Osun State election.

In a statement on Monday, Obi congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke and the people of Osun on the outcome of the election, noting that the people spoke through the ballot and reaffirmed that power belongs to the people.

He, however, urged that the celebration be tempered with remembrance of those who died.

“As we celebrate this success, let’s not forget those who made the supreme sacrifice for our democracy during the Osun election.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives under different circumstances during the electoral period. I believe these families deserve our collective compassion, solidarity, and support,” he added.

Obi said the families should be identified and reached through visits, condolences and appropriate compensation, irrespective of the political side they belonged to.

“Elections should be about the people, their choices, and their aspirations, not about the loss of precious lives. No political victory is worth the blood of a Nigerian,” he said.

The NDC candidate prayed that Nigeria’s democracy would mature to a point where elections no longer cost human lives and political differences are settled through issue-based campaigns and the rule of law.
