A section of the newly commissioned LAMECO Flyover in Osogbo, Osun State, has subsided, prompting security authorities to cordon off the bridge less than a month after it was inaugurated by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
It will be recalled that the 672-metre flyover, commissioned on July 1, 2026, by Governor Adeleke, developed a noticeable depression in the early hours of Friday following heavy rainfall in the Osun State capital.
The damaged section, located on one lane of the bridge, showed visible cracks and a sunken asphalt surface.
This raised concerns among motorists and residents, many of whom were forced to take alternative routes.
During a visit to the scene, operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps were seen cordoning off the affected section to prevent motorists and pedestrians from accessing the bridge.
The development has also prompted a fresh controversy, with the ruling Accord Party and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) trading accusations.
The Accord Party, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Pastor Victor Akande, alleged that acts of vandalism targeting government infrastructure were part of a deliberate plot by the APC to discredit Governor Adeleke’s achievements ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Akande condemned the alleged destruction of public infrastructure and called on security agencies to investigate the incidents and prosecute anyone found culpable, regardless of political affiliation.
“The Osun Accord has received credible reports of a disturbing pattern of vandalisation targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke. These acts are not ordinary criminal activities but appear to be part of a calculated attempt by desperate elements in the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the remarkable achievements of the current administration ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.”
“Having failed to match the Governor’s impressive record of performance, these elements seem determined to destroy the very projects that are transforming communities across the state to create a false impression of government failure.”
“These acts of sabotage are strongly condemned in the strongest terms, and those behind them should know that public infrastructure belongs to the people of Osun State, not to any political party. The destruction of roads, public facilities, streetlights, and other government assets is an attack on the collective interest of our citizens and will not diminish the resolve of Governor Adeleke to continue delivering the dividends of democracy to every part of the state.”
Reacting to the incident, the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council described the development as evidence of poor workmanship and a lack of transparency in the execution of the project.
In a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, the opposition expressed concern over what it described as visible structural defects on the flyover, urging Governor Adeleke to immediately close the bridge for an independent structural integrity assessment.
The statement read, “This unfortunate development has vindicated the decision of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rasheed Adewolu Ladoja, a distinguished engineer to distance himself from the commissioning ceremony despite being invited by the Ademola Adeleke administration. The revered monarch neither attended the event nor sent a representative.”
“It will be recalled that the Osun APC had publicly advised Kabiyesi not to allow his impeccable professional reputation and standing as an engineer to be exploited by the state government in an attempt to confer credibility on a project whose quality had already become a subject of public concern. Today, events have proven beyond doubt that the royal father exercised sound professional judgment.”
“Like many projects executed under the current administration, the LAMECO Flyover was awarded to Kimzee Global Investment, a company known primarily for skills acquisition as well as arts and craft training programmes for youths and women. The decision to entrust a critical infrastructure project of this magnitude to such a ‘contractor’ raises fundamental questions about procurement standards, due diligence, and the government’s commitment to public safety.”
“The Council also advises motorists and other road users to exercise extreme caution and, where possible, avoid using the flyover until independent experts have certified it safe for public use. The safety and welfare of the people of Osun must never be sacrificed on the altar of political propaganda or ceremonial project commissioning.”
“Governor Adeleke is reminded that the good people of Osun are taking note of his wickedness, and that in due time, he shall face anti-graft agencies and the public to account for his corruption and other atrocities.”
