The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has lashed out at the State House of Assembly following the passage of the Local Government Amendment No. 2 Bill, 2026.
The opposition party described the legislation, which seeks to tighten state oversight of local government bank accounts, as a vindictive attempt to bypass the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.
In a statement issued by the Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, the APC accused Speaker Adewale Egbedun’s leadership of acting as a rubber stamp for the Governor Ademola Adeleke administration.
The party contends that the bill is a backdoor maneuver designed to re-establish state control over council funds just as the Supreme Court has mandated their independence.
The APC argued that the timing of the bill is highly suspect, appearing as a legislative effort to frustrate the financial freedom recently granted to the 774 local governments nationwide.
The opposition urged Governor Adeleke to accept the legal reality of the Supreme Court judgment and learn to work with the reinstated APC chairmen and councillors for the remainder of his term.
The APC statement warned that any law passed by the Assembly that contradicts the apex court’s ruling would ultimately remain unenforceable, describing the current legislative action as a shenanigan aimed at securing illegal control over local administration.
