OPWS intercepts Kingpin’s associate, recovers large arms cache in Taraba

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), have recorded a major victory with the arrest of a close associate of notorious criminal kingpin, John Ngata.

The intelligence-led operation resulted in the recovery of a massive cache of arms and ammunition in Takum Local Government Area, Taraba State.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the operation was conducted in early January 2026 following actionable intelligence regarding the suspect’s movement.

Acting swiftly, OPWS troops deployed at Zaki-Biam established a snap roadblock along the identified route and successfully intercepted the suspect without incident.

During preliminary interrogation, the suspect voluntarily led troops to a concealed armoury belonging to the criminal network at Amadu Village in Takum LGA.

A subsequent raid on the location yielded a significant recovery of weapons, including 13 AK-47 rifles, 39 AK-47 magazines, 690 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and four hand grenades.

Following the recovery, the armoury was professionally destroyed to prevent further use by criminal elements.

Commending the troops, the Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, praised their professionalism and effective utilization of intelligence, noting that the operation has successfully disrupted a deadly criminal supply chain.

General Gara reiterated his commitment to sustaining troop morale through welfare and logistical support.

He also expressed gratitude to the public for providing credible intelligence, emphasizing that community support is a critical enabler in the fight against criminality.

He urged residents to continue providing timely information to security forces, assuring them of confidentiality as OPWS remains resolute in protecting lives and property.

The Force Commander also appreciated the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs for their strategic guidance and sustained support.
