Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo has announced a major ₦2 billion infrastructure grant for Edo State University, Iyamho, alongside a significant increase in the institution’s monthly subvention.
The monthly allocation was raised from ₦100 million to ₦250 million, a move intended to bolster the university’s capacity and improve learning conditions.
Speaking at the university on Monday, the Governor described the funding as part of a broader resolve to reposition the state’s education sector.
The announcement coincided with the inauguration of the Ehi Aganmonmen Business Administration E-Library and the groundbreaking for the Peter Omoh Dunia Fitness Centre and a new University Health Centre.
Governor Okpebholo attributed the ₦2 billion state commitment to the spirit of partnership shown by the university’s management and private donors.
He specifically cited the Vice-Chancellor, Victor Adetimirin, who donated a month’s salary to the institution’s projects, as a catalyst for the government’s intervention.
“If the Vice-Chancellor can donate his salary, there is no reason the Edo State Government should not donate toward these university projects,” the Governor stated.
He also commended Chief Ehi Aganmonmen and Mr. Peter Omoh Dunia for their philanthropic contributions toward digital learning and student wellness facilities.
The Governor emphasized that these projects align with his administration’s SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes education, health, and infrastructure.
He urged other corporate organizations and individuals to emulate these gestures, noting that government efforts are most effective when supported by private-sector collaboration.
The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including the Senator representing Edo North and founding visitor of the institution, Adams Oshiomhole; the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor; and former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.
