Gov. Monday Okpebholo of Edo  has again,  demonstrated its commitment to inclusive governance by nominating Mr Martin Oli, a businessman and community leader from Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State , as Commissioner-Designate in Edo.

This is contained in a statement by the  Secretary to Edo State Government, Umar Ikhilor, in Benin on Friday.

Ikhilor revealed that the nomination is another milestone in Okpebholo’s deliberate effort to ensure that the state’s diverse communities are reflected in government appointments.

He explained that Oli’s nomination is the second major appointment, involving a non-Edo ethnic group since Okpebholo assumed office.

Newsmen recalls that the governor appointed Mr Abdulkarim Kadiri, a respected Hausa-Fulani community leader in Edo, as Special Adviser on Community Matters in Nov. 2024.

“This highlights the governor’s vision of building an administration that recognises the contributions of all residents, irrespective of ethnic background.

“Edo is home to several ethnic communities, including Igbo, Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba, and others, whose economic activities, cultural contributions, and social engagements have become part of the state’s growth story.

“The nomination of Oli reflects Okpebholo’s commitment to creating a government structure, where diverse communities can participate meaningfully in governance and contribute to policy direction.”

“Okpebholo believes that inclusive governance is not just rhetoric but requires listening to the people, understanding their concerns, and giving them seats where decisions are made,” he said.

He noted that Okpebholo’s approach represented a shift toward a more open and participatory governance model.

He stressed that residents, who had contributed to the development of Edo are recognised and given opportunities to serve.

The secretary to the Edo government further maintained that Oli, an established entrepreneur with considerable private sector experience, has also built a reputation as a community advocate within Edo Igbo community.

He said Oli had been supporting grassroots development initiatives and programmes in the state, aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities.

‘His nomination underscores the importance of recognising competence, commitment, and community service in the selection of public officers.

“His nomination will now proceed to the Edo State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation in line with constitutional procedures,” he said.
