In a decisive move to curb criminal activities and enhance public safety, the Ogun State Police Command has announced an intensified enforcement operation targeting vehicles with illegal license plates and the unauthorized use of sirens and amber lights.
The operation, which begins immediately, focuses on identifying and impounding vehicles bearing fake, altered, covered, or invalid number plates.
The Command specifically highlighted the misuse of dealer (temporary) plates, noting that intelligence reports indicate these irregularities are frequently exploited by criminal elements to mask their identities and facilitate illegal operations across the state.
DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Command, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
He explained that the crackdown is not merely a traffic enforcement exercise but a strategic security measure aimed at disrupting criminal networks that rely on anonymity to operate.
To ensure the operation is conducted professionally and without infringing on the rights of citizens, the Command has deployed specialized units, including the Motor Traffic Department, the Monitoring Unit, and the X-Squad.
These units are tasked with strict operational oversight.
Furthermore, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been directed to personally supervise the enforcement within their jurisdictions to guarantee transparency and adherence to approved guidelines.
The Commissioner of Police has appealed to the public for full cooperation, urging motorists to comply strictly with traffic regulations and rectify any issues with their vehicle documentation immediately.
Residents have also been advised to prioritize their safety by avoiding suspicious vehicles and utilizing only recognized motor parks and designated pick-up points for transportation.
The Command reiterated that offenders apprehended during this exercise will face prosecution in accordance with extant laws.
