The Managing Director of the Ogun Osun River Basin Development Authority (O-ORBDA), Engr. Dr. Adedeji Ashiru, has charged Nigerian students to embrace innovation, citizenship, and collective responsibility as tools to drive sustainable national development and economic transformation.
Speaking at the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Mentorship Summit, Dr. Ashiru said Nigeria’s future depends on the creativity and civic commitment of its youth, who must see themselves as the architects of a new and prosperous nation.
“Innovation drives progress. By embracing creativity, leveraging technology, and fostering entrepreneurship, we can unlock new industries, create meaningful jobs, and solve pressing problems,” he said.
He urged students to go beyond academic pursuits and engage actively in civic duties, national dialogue, and community building. According to him, “citizenship is not just about rights, but responsibility, accountability, and a sense of belonging.”
The O-ORBDA boss noted that collective responsibility the ability of citizens and leaders to work together for shared goals remains the linchpin of national success. He called on Nigerians to support strong institutions, uphold transparency, and hold one another accountable to ensure lasting progress.
Highlighting the achievements of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Authority, Dr. Ashiru said the agency’s innovative agricultural and water management projects demonstrate what is possible when creativity meets responsibility.
“Through modern irrigation systems, O-ORBDA has empowered farmers, increased crop yields, and improved food security for millions,” he said. “We have seen how innovation and teamwork can change lives, create wealth, and build sustainable communities.”
He further encouraged policymakers, the private sector, and civil society to replicate the O-ORBDA development model across Nigeria’s river basins to achieve food sufficiency and rural transformation.
Dr. Ashiru described the youth as Nigeria’s most valuable resource, urging student leaders to commit to excellence, integrity, and nation-building.
“As student leaders, you have the potential to shape Nigeria’s future. Remain committed to your vision, work hard, and uphold the values of innovation, citizenship, and collective responsibility,” he told the audience.
The summit, attended by student leaders, educators, and government officials, focused on mentoring youth for leadership, innovation, and public service.
Ashiru’s address drew applause from participants who described his message as a timely reminder of the role of innovation and accountability in securing Nigeria’s future.
