We did not rename Tai Solarin University of Education after Awujale — Ogun Government

The Ogun State Government on Thursday dismissed circulating claims that Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, has been renamed Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona University of Education.

A statement signed by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun, explained that an existing institution, the Sikiru Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology in Omu, already stands as a tribute to the late Awujale.

Tracing the university’s evolution, the government recalled that the Ogun State College of Education was established in 1977. It was first renamed Tai Solarin College of Education, Science and Technology in 1994 and became Tai Solarin University of Education in 2005. This change generated debates with the National Universities Commission (NUC) over its dual authority to award both NCE and degree programmes.

Following the NUC’s position, a previous administration relocated Tai Solarin College of Education to Omu, while TASUED in Ijagun retained its name.

In 2022, under Governor Abiodun’s leadership, the Omu campus was officially designated as the Sikiru Kayode Adetona College of Education, Science and Technology to honour the late monarch.

The statement clarified that Governor Abiodun’s comments during the eighth-day Fidau prayers for the late Awujale only referenced these earlier commemorative efforts and did not announce any change to TASUED’s name, which now falls under federal oversight.
