Odemwingie slams Atalanta for blocking Ademola Lookman’s dream move

Former Super Eagles forward, Peter Odemwingie, has criticised Italian Serie A club Atalanta for blocking Ademola Lookman’s summer transfer despite strong interest from Europe’s biggest sides.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward was one of the most sought-after names in the summer window, attracting interest from Bayern Munich, Tottenham Hotspur, Galatasaray, and Inter Milan.

However, Atalanta refused to sanction a deal, standing firm on their €50 million valuation and rejecting bids — including Inter’s approach, which was blocked to avoid strengthening a Serie A rival.

Speaking to Footy-Africa, Odemwingie expressed his disappointment at the Bergamo outfit’s stance.

“Lookman has exceeded every expectation since joining Atalanta. The fair thing would have been to let him pursue the path he desired. They should have allowed him to follow his dream,” the 43-year-old said.

He added: “He’s played three full seasons, given his all, and even delivered European glory. What more could they have asked for? It doesn’t reflect well when a player who has carried the club on his shoulders is held back at this point in his career.”

Lookman, who netted 15 goals and provided five assists in 31 matches last season, remains a key figure at Atalanta and has been included in Ivan Juric’s UEFA Champions League squad.

Still, with Galatasaray keeping close tabs on his situation, speculation about a possible exit in the next transfer window is unlikely to disappear.
