Nigeria’s major gas pipeline projects are progressing at different stages, with the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) pipeline reaching 96 per cent completion while the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline stands at 88 per cent, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reported.
The figures are contained in the regulator’s August 2026 Fact Sheet on developments in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sector.
The OB3 pipeline recorded an overall completion level of 96 per cent, while its River Niger Crossing section had reached 100 per cent completion.
The ELPS Midline Compressor project was also at 96.33 per cent, putting it among the infrastructure projects closest to completion.
Other projects recorded lower completion levels, with the Odidi-Warri Expansion Pipeline (OWEP) at 75.57 per cent and the Escravos-Odidi Pipeline (EOP) at 27.94 per cent.
The figures show a wide gap in the progress of the gas infrastructure projects, from the completed River Niger Crossing component of OB3 to the EOP, which remained below 30 per cent completion as of August.
NMDPRA also reported that the AKK project stood at 88 per cent completion in August.
However, the regulator noted that the latest AKK completion figure now covers both the main pipeline backbone and ancillary facilities.
This means the August figure should not be treated as a straightforward month-on-month construction comparison with earlier figures without accounting for the expanded scope captured in the latest assessment.
The progress of the pipelines is significant to Nigeria’s efforts to move gas to power plants, industries and other users, with the projects forming part of the country’s wider gas transportation infrastructure.
Among the projects, the completion of the River Niger Crossing represents a key milestone for OB3, while the remaining work on EOP leaves it at the other end of the reported completion range.
The August data therefore presents a mixed picture of Nigeria’s gas pipeline development, with some major infrastructure projects nearing completion while others remain at substantially earlier stages.
