The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has unveiled its initial findings regarding the alarming gas bubbling incident in the Bille Community of Rivers State.
In a technical brief, the Commission Chief Executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan indicated that preliminary field observations point to subsurface geological activity as the likely culprit, rather than a localized failure of industrial surface equipment.
“Early evidence suggests that shifting underground pressures have forced natural gas deposits to seep through the earth’s crust and emerge at the surface.”
“Immediately following the notification of the leak, the NUPRC triggered a high-level technical investigation in strict accordance with national oil and gas industry protocols. This ongoing operation utilizes a multi-stakeholder approach to map the precise source and the full geographic footprint of the emissions. Specialized teams are currently conducting advanced geotechnical and geological surveys to establish an evidence-based framework for immediate containment and the development of a long-term environmental remediation strategy.”
“In a move to de-escalate anxiety within the Bille Community, the NUPRC stressed that public health and the preservation of the local ecosystem are the absolute priorities of the current intervention. The regulatory body assured residents that all containment efforts are being executed in line with global best practices and stringent safety standards,” the statement read in part.
While the technical teams complete their deep-level assessments, the NUPRC has urged community members to remain calm, avoid the immediate vicinity of the seepage, and follow all safety directives issued by on-site authorities to ensure a swift resolution.
