In a major breakthrough for security and a profound relief to the Christian community, the remaining worshippers abducted two weeks ago from Kurmin Wali in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State have been released from captivity.
The victims, who were seized when armed bandits invaded three separate churches during Sunday services, are now reportedly under the care of the Kaduna State Government.
The initial abduction saw at least 177 people marched into the surrounding forests after gunmen fired sporadically to instill terror among the congregations.
Confirming the release on Thursday morning, the Village Head of Kurmin Wali, Mr. Ishaku Dan’azumi, stated that he received word early Tuesday that the survivors had been moved to the state capital.
While questions remain regarding the demands for ransom and motorcycles previously made by the kidnappers, Dan’azumi noted that he could not confirm the specific details of the facilitation.
The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed immense gratitude following the development.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. (Dr.) Joseph John Hayab, hailed the decisive leadership of Governor Uba Sani.
Hayab described the Governor as a leader who truly listens to the grievances of his people, noting that his empathy and commitment to fulfilling his promises stand in sharp contrast to past experiences where citizens often felt ignored during such tragedies.
Rev. Ma’aji Caleb, the Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of CAN, echoed these sentiments, attributing the safe return of the worshippers to divine intervention and the collaborative efforts of the government.
“Glory be to God, my people are out,” Caleb remarked, emphasizing that while the association was not involved in direct negotiations, its focus remained entirely on the safe return of the congregants.
Northern CAN also extended its appreciation to the broader security apparatus, specifically saluting the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other operatives for their tireless dedication.
The association further acknowledged the oversight and support provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Director-General of the SSS, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi.
Despite the joy surrounding the release, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat of banditry in Southern Kaduna, particularly in rural areas like Kajuru which have become hotspots for violent incursions.
In light of this, Northern CAN has pledged its full support to the government and security agencies to ensure that places of worship remain safe. Rev. Hayab urged all citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly to prevent a recurrence of such tragic events.
