The North Central Zonal Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a stern warning over attempts to destabilize the party, describing recent manoeuvres as an unfolding “political coup.”
The committee convened an emergency meeting in Abuja on Tuesday to assess tensions following the October 31 ruling by Justice Omotosho of the Federal High Court, which has reignited internal disputes within the opposition party.
Party leaders accused certain factions of seeking to seize control through unconstitutional actions. They reiterated their unwavering support for the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, stressing that moves to remove him were illegal, reckless, and capable of deepening the PDP’s internal crisis.
Francis Orogu, Secretary of the PDP North Central Zone, read the communiqué from the meeting, emphasising that the zone rejects any attempt to subvert the party’s constitution or undermine its democratic processes.
The committee condemned the purported dismissal of Damagum by four National Working Committee (NWC) members and the appointment of Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman.
The statement described the action as “reckless, unconstitutional, and unacceptable.”
“We completely dissociate ourselves from the purported impeachment or removal of the National Chairman by only four members of the NWC and from the appointment of Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed in his place,” the communiqué said.
The North-Central PDP urged all members to uphold the party’s constitution and prioritise unity, warning against actions that could further destabilise the organisation.
