The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has disassociated itself from planned protests against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled for Tuesday, describing the organisers as impostors.
In a statement on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said reports linking the NNPP to demonstrations at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja and across other states were false.
“The NNPP wishes to use this medium to dissociate the party from the illegal demonstration called by an illegal body claiming to be speaking on behalf of the NNPP,” Johnson said.
He explained that those behind the planned protest were no longer party members, having been expelled by the appropriate party organs as affirmed by the Federal High Court in Suit Number FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2024 on April 18, 2024. Johnson noted that the expelled members have not appealed the judgment and are instead engaging in “forum shopping” to obtain court orders without legal basis.
“NNPP wishes to reiterate that it is not involved in any protest slated for Tuesday, and state categorically that the persons behind the protest are impostors,” he said.
Johnson called on party members to remain calm and not be provoked by individuals seeking to distract the party from its objectives.
