The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi has hosted a high-level delegation from Google to solidify a strategic partnership focused on cloud adoption and the responsible deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Led by Mr. Charles Murito, Google’s Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Sub-Saharan Africa, the engagement highlighted a shared vision for leveraging forward-looking technology to solve real-world national challenges while advancing the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI).
During the meeting, Inuwa reiterated NITDA’s commitment to an inclusive regulatory approach, emphasizing that the agency prioritizes practical, stakeholder-driven solutions over purely theoretical frameworks.
This philosophy is currently being operationalized through the National Cloud Policy 2025, which mandates that sensitive and classified government data be hosted within Nigeria’s borders to ensure data sovereignty and improve national security.
Mr. Murito lauded this collaborative methodology, noting that the Cloud First Guidelines have evolved through extensive consultation into a balanced roadmap that effectively addresses critical issues such as data classification and indigenous capacity.
Providing a technical update on the NSCI, Dr. Aminu Lawal, SA to the DG on Policy, confirmed that the initiative is nearing finalization after incorporating rigorous feedback from both industry and government stakeholders.
The guidelines are expected to bolster national confidence in digital infrastructure by driving secure cloud adoption and enhancing data resilience across the public sector.
Mr. Murito further contextualized the human impact of these technologies, citing their potential to optimize healthcare access and transform education by improving student-teacher ratios through AI-driven insights.
This engagement marks another milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of its $100 billion digital economy ambition, supported by ambitious literacy targets to ensure 50 million Nigerians are digitally skilled by 2027.
By aligning local data hosting with global security standards, NITDA and Google are positioning Nigeria to transition from a consumer of technology to a sovereign digital power.
