The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has commissioned a maritime museum at the Nigerian Maritime Resource Development Centre (NMRDC), Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos.
The commissioning was performed by the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola who was represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Data Management Services, Mrs. Aisha Jidda.
Speaking at the commissioning, Mobereola described the museum as the agency’s efforts to preserve Nigeria’s maritime history and promote awareness of the nation’s blue economy potential.
The NIMASA DG further explained that the museum was established to preserve historical artefacts, archival materials and records that reflect the evolution of Nigeria’s maritime industry while inspiring future generations of maritime professionals.
According to him, the facility will serve as an educational and research centre where students, researchers, industry stakeholders and members of the public can deepen their understanding of the country’s maritime development.
He noted that the initiative aligns with NIMASA’s commitment to promoting maritime awareness, supporting research and preserving the legacy of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
“The museum is more than a collection of artefacts; it is a repository of our maritime history and a symbol of our commitment to preserving the nation’s rich maritime heritage for future generations,” he said.
Mobereola added that the museum would contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s Marine and Blue Economy by promoting knowledge, innovation and public engagement in the sector.
He urged educational institutions, maritime stakeholders and the general public to take advantage of the facility by visiting the museum to appreciate the country’s maritime journey and its strategic role in national development.
Located within the Nigerian Maritime Resource Development Centre in Kirikiri, Lagos, the museum is expected to function as a centre for learning, research and public engagement as Nigeria intensifies efforts to unlock opportunities in the maritime and blue economy sectors.
