A Nigerian man Uche Emeka Terry, who is wanted for openly identifying himself as bisexual, in violation of the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, is still at large.
The act which criminalizes homosexual relationships and even associations, prescribes penalties ranging from 10 to 14 years in prison.
Sources say that Uche Emeka Terry, has been at large since 2018, when he was caught in an intimate moment with another man in Edo State and was arrested and detained without trial.
In detention, he endured physical abuse, humiliation, and dehumanization and was treated like a criminal, punished, and abused just because of his sexual orientation.
However following his release, Terry’s troubles continued. Abandoned by friends and disowned by his family, he struggled with depression and constant fear and had nowhere to turn and completely alone.
The only person who stood by him was his mother who chose to help him escape and with her support, he fled Nigeria for a new lease on life.
Today he remains on a wanted list in Nigeria, as Human rights advocates warn that if he ever returns to Nigeria, his life would still be in danger.
