Air transportation remains one of the most vital sectors in Nigeria, connecting cities across the country and linking the nation to the rest of the world. From bustling commercial hubs to emerging regional terminals, several states operate functioning airports with regular domestic and in some cases, international flights. These facilities not only ease travel but also drive economic activity, tourism, and investment.

Lagos State

Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), located in Ikeja, remains Nigeria’s busiest aviation hub. It handles the bulk of international arrivals and departures while also operating extensive domestic services. MMIA is widely considered the gateway to West Africa.

Abuja (Federal Capital Territory)

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is the second busiest in the country. Situated in

Nigeria’s capital city, it offers both domestic and international connections, linking Abuja to major

destinations in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond.

Kano State

Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is one of the oldest airports in Nigeria and continues to serve as a major aviation hub in Northern Nigeria. It caters to both domestic and international flights, particularly on the Hajj route and Middle Eastern connections.

Rivers State

The Port Harcourt International Airport is an important hub for Nigeria’s oil-rich South-South region. It handles both passenger and cargo services, connecting Port Harcourt to other parts of Nigeria and select international destinations.

Enugu State

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu serves as the gateway to the South-East. It has been upgraded in recent years and operates domestic services as well as some international flights.

Cross River State

Located in Calabar, the Margaret Ekpo International Airport plays a crucial role in tourism, particularly for visitors attending the annual Calabar Carnival and other events. It currently handles domestic flights and charter operations.

Delta State

Asaba International Airport has grown steadily as an important transit point in the South-South region. It serves regular domestic routes, connecting Delta State to Lagos, Abuja, and beyond.

Bayelsa State

The relatively new Bayelsa International Airport, situated in Yenagoa, provides improved connectivity for the state. It is expected to play a vital role in boosting economic activities in the Niger Delta region.

Anambra State

The Chinua Achebe International Airport (Umueri) is one of the newest airports in Nigeria. Opened in recent years, it is rapidly positioning itself as a gateway for Anambra and neighboring states in the South-East.

Bauchi State

Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Airport in Bauchi is fully operational with domestic services. It is named after Nigeria’s first Prime Minister and serves as a regional hub in the North-East.

Kaduna State

The Kaduna International Airport has functioned as both a domestic and international airport. It gained prominence in 2017 when it temporarily served as the main entry point for Abuja during runway repairs at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Ebonyi State

The Ebonyi State International Airport, located in Onueke near Abakaliki, is another recent addition to Nigeria’s aviation map. It was commissioned to improve connectivity and open up Ebonyi to national and international business opportunities.
