Nigerian institutions that have banned ‘sign-out’ ceremonies

13 Sept 2025

In Nigeria, the tradition of “sign-out” ceremonies where graduating students scribble farewell messages on white shirts and parade in celebration has long been considered a campus culture.

However, concerns about discipline, morality, and public safety have prompted a growing number of institutions to outlaw the practice.

Across several universities and polytechnics, managements have moved to prohibit the celebrations, describing them as disruptive, undignified, and in some cases dangerous. Below are some of the schools that have enforced bans on sign-out activities in recent years.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)

In 2025, UNIZIK placed an indefinite ban on all sign-out ceremonies. The university’s management cited recurring disorderly conduct, excessive partying, and activities considered unbecoming of graduates. Officials stressed that the institution was committed to ensuring students conclude their studies with decorum and respect for its reputation.

Federal University of Lafia (FULafia)

Also in 2025, FULafia restricted celebrations to designated faculty areas and barred sign-out activities at the campus gate. The move followed a tragic tricycle accident linked to an uncontrolled gathering of students. According to the university, the decision was taken to prevent similar incidents and safeguard the lives of undergraduates.

Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai

IBBU announced a full ban in 2024 after repeated reports of students indulging in “messy and unsafe” practices. These included covering themselves in ink and engaging in rowdy displays on campus. The administration declared such acts harmful and inconsistent with the values of discipline and respect it seeks to uphold.

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS)

UDUS, in 2023, outlawed unauthorised sign-out activities following reports of unruly student behaviour. The management argued that the practice not only undermined the image of the institution but also stripped graduating students of the dignity expected at such a milestone.

Kaduna Polytechnic (KadPoly)

KadPoly followed suit in 2024 by prohibiting all forms of sign-out celebrations. Officials labelled the practice “uncultured” and warned that writing on clothes or engaging in similar displays ran contrary to the school’s values of professionalism and discipline.
