12 Sept 2025

From courtrooms to concert halls, these Nigerian musicians prove that a legal mind and creative talent can be a powerful combination. Before they were making hits, they were studying to be lawyers.

1. Falz

Falz isn’t just a witty rapper; he’s a qualified lawyer. The son of renowned human rights activist Femi Falana, he studied law in the UK and was called to the Nigerian Bar. His legal background shines through in his music, where he often tackles social justice and corruption with a sharp, satirical pen.

2. Omawumi

Omawumi is a vocal powerhouse who also holds a law degree from Ambrose Alli University. She even spent some time in a legal practice before her success on West African Idols launched her into stardom. Her legal training gave her the confidence to navigate the music industry and produce socially conscious hits.

3. Chinko Ekun

Known for his unique blend of Yoruba and English rap, Chinko Ekun is another lawyer-turned-musician. He earned his law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University. His legal background is said to have sharpened his discipline and focus, which are evident in his punchy and well-structured verses.

4. Sasha P

A true pioneer, Sasha P broke barriers for female rappers in Nigeria. She studied law at the University of Lagos and used that knowledge to master brand management and business contracts in a fast-paced industry. Though she’s now a fashion entrepreneur, she remains an icon who used her legal smarts to succeed in music.

5. Pepenazi

The Musician with a Business Mind

Pepenazi, the voice behind tracks like “Illegal,” is also a graduate of law. While he initially studied Estate Management, he later pursued law before his musical career took off. His academic discipline helped him build a solid foundation for his work, showing that a good business sense is as important as musical talent.
