Nigeria’s maritime sector is entering a transformative phase, driven by an extraordinary surge in export activity that is reshaping the nation’s role in global trade. Frederik Klinke, the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals Nigeria, revealed that export volumes have skyrocketed by an unprecedented 1,085%, marking a significant milestone in the country’s economic trajectory.

Speaking at the Blue Economy Investment Summit in Abuja, Klinke noted that this surge reflects the growing impact of strategic reforms, improved port operations, and increased private sector participation. According to him, Nigeria is steadily transitioning from an import-dependent economy to a more balanced trade environment where exports are gaining a stronger footing.

He emphasized that targeted investments in port infrastructure, digitalization, and logistics efficiency are finally unlocking long-standing bottlenecks that once hindered trade competitiveness. These improvements, he stated, are not only boosting export capacity but also enhancing Nigeria’s attractiveness as a regional trade hub.

Klinke also pointed out that while the global maritime industry is currently navigating uncertainties, including supply chain disruptions and shifting trade patterns, Nigeria’s progress stands out as a positive indicator of resilience and forward-thinking policy.

The APM Terminals boss stressed the importance of sustaining this momentum through continuous collaboration between government agencies and private stakeholders. He called for policies that encourage export diversification, streamline regulatory processes, and support local producers in accessing international markets.

As Nigeria deepens its focus on the Blue Economy, this remarkable growth signals a broader economic shift. With sustained investment and policy consistency, the country is poised to strengthen its position in global commerce and drive long-term prosperity through maritime development.
