Nigeria named among global champions of universal health coverage

Nigeria has been recognized as one of only eight countries globally serving as “champions” for the advancement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), a designation announced at the High-Level Forum on UHC in Tokyo, Japan.

The acknowledgement highlights the nation’s accelerating health reforms and patient-centred progress under the current administration.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who represented Nigeria at the forum, described the recognition as a testament to the bold reforms led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the last two and a half years.

He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to ensuring that citizens, regardless of location or economic background, have access to safe and affordable care.

During the high-level visit, Prof. Pate held strategic talks with the Japanese Minister of Health and key development partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank Group, and the World Health Organization (WHO).

These discussions have paved the way for expanded collaboration in several critical areas, including the revitalization of primary healthcare and the boosting of domestic production capacities for vaccines and essential medicines.

Furthermore, the partnerships aim to enhance Nigeria’s readiness for public health crises while leveraging Japan’s newly launched UHC Hub for technical expertise.

Prof. Pate emphasized that the Federal, State, and Local Governments are currently mobilizing unprecedented levels of domestic investment, which is now being matched by these strategic international partnerships.

According to the Minister, the reforms are specifically designed to deliver impact where it matters most in the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Priorities include expanding primary healthcare coverage to reduce financial hardship for citizens seeking care, alongside efforts to increase the availability and performance of health workers. Special attention is also being directed toward enhancing essential services for women, children, and other vulnerable groups.

“We are seeing concrete improvements and will sustain the momentum. Our mission is simple: deliver more, deliver better for every Nigerian family,” Prof. Pate added.

The Minister credited President Tinubu for placing health at the center of the national development agenda, asserting that a healthier population is the prerequisite for Nigeria’s economic prosperity.
