NESREA seals 30 construction sites in FCT

The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has sealed 30 sites across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for environmental violations.

The enforcement action, carried out on Tuesday, targeted facilities found to be in breach of the National Environmental (Construction Sector) Regulations of 2011.

Prof. Innocent Barikor, the Director General of NESREA, characterized environmental compliance as a mandatory obligation rather than a choice.

Speaking through Mr. Elijah Udofia, the Director of Environmental Quality Control, the Director General expressed disappointment over the persistent negligence shown by many operators.

He highlighted that despite the sector’s vital role in national development, unregulated activities pose severe risks, including improper waste management, construction on floodplains, and the unsafe handling of hazardous chemicals.

The agency noted that the sealed facilities had demonstrated a consistent unwillingness to comply with regulatory documentation and failed to respond to previous compliance engagements.

Prof. Barikor warned that failure to adhere to time-bound and evidence-based communications constitutes a serious breach of law that endangers both public health and the local ecosystem.

Among the prominent sites affected by the closure are Primgate Reality, XTadok Nigeria Limited, and Urban Cribs in the Wuye district, as well as various projects in Jabi, Katampe, and Airport Road.

The agency emphasized that the regulations are specifically designed to prevent environmental harm before it occurs.

NESREA has assured the public that it will continue to apply enforcement measures fairly and consistently across the country to ensure that construction activities are managed responsibly from inception to completion.
