Near nationwide blackout as Nigeria’s power grid collapses again

29 Dec 2025

Nigeria experienced a major electricity disruption on Monday afternoon after the national power grid collapsed, leaving most parts of the country in near-total darkness.

Data released at 3:12 pm on December 29, 2025, showed that only two distribution companies were supplied with power.

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company received 30 megawatts, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company was allocated 20 megawatts. All other distribution companies received no power.

The outage affected key operators including Eko, Ikeja, Benin, Enugu, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola, disrupting households, businesses, and essential public services. Nationwide electricity distribution fell to just 50 megawatts, far below normal operating levels.

The Nigerian National Grid confirmed that efforts were underway to restore supply, though no timeline for full recovery was provided. Neither the Transmission Company of Nigeria nor the Federal Ministry of Power had issued an official explanation for the collapse at the time of reporting.

This latest grid failure adds to a history of repeated outages in recent years, which have caused prolonged blackouts and significant economic losses nationwide.
