At the National Data Privacy Summit held in Abuja, the National Commissioner of the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji, emphasized the role of synergy in safeguarding individual privacy while fostering a data-driven economy.

Under the theme “Privacy in the Era of Emerging Technologies,” Dr. Olatunji highlighted that the commission’s current priority is achieving a strategic balance between information accessibility and robust data protection.

He noted that while the NDPC is committed to taking bold risks to accelerate national growth, these innovations must be developed alongside rigorous privacy frameworks to ensure that Nigeria’s rapid digital evolution remains secure and ethical.

Supporting this vision, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, underscored the transformative potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) and future digital computing for the Nigerian economy.

Represented by Executive Commissioner Abraham Oshadami, Dr. Maida argued that building public trust through ethical safeguards is a prerequisite for sustainable progress.

He acknowledged that while emerging technologies offer immense benefits, they also introduce complex risks to personal rights.

He further validated concerns regarding the massive volume of sensitive subscriber data held by telecommunications operators, stressing that inter-agency collaboration is essential to protecting user connectivity and digital identities.

The summit also drew support from state leadership, with the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Dr. Bako Shurkuk, affirming that emerging technologies are vital tools for achieving sustainable regional growth.

The consensus among the leaders was that as Nigeria integrates more deeply into the global digital landscape, the success of its technological advancements will depend heavily on the strength of its privacy protections and the clarity of its regulatory environment.
