The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Ogun Command, has arrested a woman, Balikis Shobowale for allegedly attempting to smuggle alcohol into the Ibara Custodial Centre, Abeokuta.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Mr Olayinka Odukoya, disclosed this on Sunday in a statement issued to newsmen in Abeokuta.
Odukoya said the suspect was arrested at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday during a routine screening at the facility.
According to him, security personnel detected ethanol concealed inside a pack of bottled-water and disguised as drinking water intended for an inmate.
“She was caught concealing ethanol inside a bottled-water pack, disguising it as drinking water intended for an inmate.
“The suspect was immediately detained and later handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution,” he said.
The Controller of Corrections, Ogun Command, Mr Abioye Adesina, commended the officials for their vigilance and adherence to established security protocols.
Adesina said the service maintains zero tolerance for the smuggling of contraband and other illegal activities capable of compromising security within custodial facilities.
“The interception demonstrates the determination of the service to protect inmates, preserve order and uphold the rule of law,” he said.
He warned that attempts to introduce contraband into custodial facilities would attract swift legal action.
The controller assured the public that the command remains resolute in preventing the infiltration of contraband and safeguarding the integrity of the correctional system.
