The Nigerian Navy and the Nigeria Customs Service have intercepted 518 bags of suspected smuggled parboiled rice during a joint operation along the Badagry waterways.
The seizure followed an intelligence-led operation carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service.
Four boats transporting the suspected contraband were intercepted during the operation.
The exercise was supported by the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service, while surveillance data from the Western Regional Control Centre, FALCON EYE, played a key role in tracking the movement of the vessels prior to their interception.
Security officials stated that the operation reflects the growing cooperation between the Navy and Customs in tackling smuggling and other illicit activities within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
They noted that the deployment of modern surveillance technology continues to enhance maritime monitoring and enforcement efforts.
The Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, alongside the Customs Area Controller, Apapa Area Command, Comptroller Patrick Ntadi, reiterated the agencies’ resolve to sustain the crackdown on smuggling.
“We remain committed to intensifying joint operations to combat smuggling and other maritime crimes in support of national security and economic stability,” they said.
The interception is part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the illegal movement of goods through the nation’s waterways, protect legitimate trade, and safeguard government revenue.
Authorities also stressed that closer inter-agency collaboration will remain a central strategy in addressing economic sabotage and strengthening maritime security nationwide.
