…Dominates opening day
The Lagos Swimming team made a strong statement on the opening day of the swimming events at the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, claiming seven gold and one silver medal.
In the Girls’ events, Lagos swimmers excelled in the 100m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly, 50m Backstroke, and 4×100m Medley Relay, securing four medals in total. The male swimmers contributed three gold and one silver medal across the 200m Individual Medley, 100m Backstroke, 4×100m Freestyle Relay, and 50m Freestyle events, bringing the swimming medal tally to eight.
Lagos gymnasts also bolstered the state’s standing, earning four medals in the Boys’ Artistic Event, including one gold, one silver, and two bronze.
On the football pitch, Lagos male and female teams continued their campaign with victories over the host state, Delta, winning 1-0 and 2-0 respectively at St. Patrick’s College Field, Asaba.
Team Lagos maintained momentum in weightlifting, securing two silver and one bronze medal in the 55kg category.
At the venue, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, attributed the team’s success to the support of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu. “The impressive results we are witnessing today reflect the governor’s commitment to sports development. Team Lagos is expected to maintain its winning streak across other disciplines,” he said.
Fatodu added, “We are proud of our swimmers, and we are confident they will represent Nigeria exceptionally well. We anticipate further victories in the upcoming events. Lagos has always been synonymous with excellence, and this performance demonstrates our dedication to nurturing young talent and promoting sports excellence.”
