In this interview with selected journalists, Makinde, a former House of Representatives member reflects on his legislative milestones and outlines his vision for Ife Federal Constituency
Hon. Makinde, you are a former lawmaker. What distinguishes you as the pre-eminent candidate for this position?
My track record speaks for itself. Throughout my career, I have consistently fulfilled my promises, and my devotion to the Progressive family remains unwavering. I have worked tirelessly to elevate the standard of living for our constituents, and I am fully prepared to scale these efforts to the next level.
Could you highlight achievements from your previous tenure?
I am particularly proud of initiating the modern City Gate project, advocating for the establishment of the Yakooyo Hospital, and ensuring the Aluti Erin Hospital project successfully transitioned into its implementation phase. These initiatives are designed to transform our communal infrastructure, and I am deeply committed to overseeing their final completion.
How do you intend to consolidate support among APC leaders and the party faithful?
My philosophy is rooted in unity and collective progress. I am eager to collaborate with any stakeholder who shares our vision for a revitalized constituency. I believe my extensive experience and genuine passion for public service make me an invaluable asset to the party’s broader objectives.
What is your message to the Obas and traditional institutions within the constituency?
I hold the wisdom and leadership of our traditional rulers in the highest esteem. I am committed to a collaborative partnership with them to address the specific needs of our various communities while ensuring that our rich cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.
Why should the general public place their trust in your leadership?
I have a documented history of prioritizing the needs of the constituency above all else. My integrity and dedication to public service are absolute. I am not merely seeking votes; I am offering a proven record of delivery and a lifelong commitment to the people I serve.
How do you plan to address the specific concerns of women and the youth?
The empowerment of our youth and women is fundamental to our societal advancement. I have already initiated various programs to support emerging entrepreneurs, provide vocational skills training, and promote educational excellence. I will continue to prioritize their welfare and ensure they have a seat at the decision-making table.
What is your ultimate vision for the future of the constituency?
I envision a prosperous and inclusive community where every citizen enjoys access to quality education, modern healthcare, and robust economic opportunities. I am prepared to work tirelessly to translate that vision into a tangible reality.
You have been a stalwart of the Progressive movement for many years. What drives such deep-seated loyalty?
My adherence to the party’s core principles and values keeps me steadfast. Having witnessed the transformative impact of our party’s governance firsthand, I am entirely convinced that we are on the right trajectory for national development.
How will your specific experience benefit the constituents in the coming term?
My years of service have afforded me an intimate understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within our constituency. This means I can hit the ground running on day one, leveraging my established networks and experience to deliver immediate and impactful results.
Which legacies are you most proud of, and how do you intend to build upon them?
I am immensely proud of the physical projects I have initiated and the individual lives we have touched through our welfare programs. I intend to build upon these foundations by completing all ongoing infrastructural works and launching new initiatives that address the evolving needs of our people.
You have remained with the Progressive party through various political climates. What does this consistency say about your character?
It demonstrates that I am committed to ideology rather than mere opportunism. I am a servant-leader, not an individual seeking a position for personal gain. My journey through the AD, AC, and ACN to our current APC reflects a consistent belief in a specific set of developmental ideals.
How do you respond to critics who suggest your long-term loyalty to the party has not been sufficiently rewarded?
I believe I have been rewarded through the profound trust of the people and the numerous opportunities I have had to serve in various capacities, including the judiciary and several school boards. I am also proud to have been a founding member of the South West Agenda ’23 (SWAGA). I must express my sincere gratitude to my leaders, particularly the Honorable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alh. Gboyega Oyetola, for his support. I remain loyal to his ideology, and that shared vision is what drives me, rather than personal ambition.
What is your final message to APC leaders currently evaluating your candidacy?
My experience, my established legacies, and my steadfastness within the party are significant assets to this constituency. Ile-Ife requires a ranking personality, someone who is not a stranger to the Progressive family. I am exceptionally well-equipped for this role. I am ready to work with all stakeholders to support the Ooni of Ife and our other monarchs, who are doing magnificent work to reposition our ancient town. Ile-Ife needs an experienced hand in government, and I am ready to serve.
What sets you apart from competitors, particularly those who have recently joined the APC?
The difference is clear: I am a product of our party, born and raised. I understand precisely where the challenges lie because I have walked this path with our people for decades. While others may be newer to our fold, I have been consistent. My record of welfare for our seniors and my legislative contributions stand as a challenge to any newcomer. I am a giver by nature, and I invite the public to judge my single term of service against any other record. I have walked the talk, and I am ready to do even more.
